About The Event

$245 is reimburseable by charter schools!

Join Instructor Ginna Brooks for a nine-week artistic journey in Mundus Botanica or The World of Botanicals.

Over the weeks, students will build on a foundation of the elements of art and principles of design through a variety of

mediums and techniques using natural inspiration as they deepen their love for the arts.

Projects will include drawing techniques such as line, gesture & contour drawing as well as shading and blending

for depth, shadows, form, and space. Students will work with a variety of materials such as charcoal, graphite, and

sumi-e (or sumi). What is sumi-e drawing? The Japanese term “sumi” means black ink, “e” means painting. Subjects are

painted with black ink in gradations ranging from pure black to the lightest shades achievable by dissolving ink in water.

Fascinating, isn’t it?

Students will also be painting with a variety of mediums including watercolor inks, acrylic paint, gouache, oil

pastels and watercolor pencils. All materials and tools are provided, and ample time will be given to each medium so

students can fully immerse themselves as they develop and hone their style. And Ginna will teach how color wheels are

integral when creating correct value for a balanced composition.

Ginna has created a variety of projects including a wire sculpture using organic shapes and an origami-inspired

folded book focusing on Fallbrook’s field botanicals. Students will learn the history of the plants being used and their

botanical makeup as well how to create art using a plants’ composition, texture, shape and patterns. A special focus will

be made for Fallbrook-native plants, so students will have a deepened appreciation for their natural surroundings.

Class days include: Tuesdays, April 18 through June 13.
